Description |
English: A complete copper-alloy catch-piece from an early Anglo-Saxon sleeve or wrist clasp of Hines's Form B20, consisting a plate and bar cast in one piece, with a shaped rear edge (Hines 1993, 64-65, fig 124). The bar is raised, and has three transverse decorative bands across it, one at either end and one central one; each band consists of three or four parallel transverse grooves. The rear edge is shaped to form a row of five triangular projections. Through the second triangle in from either end there is a circular attachment hole. The catch or loop projects from the centre of the front edge, and is rectangular in shape, measuring 13.7mm in length and 5.4mm in width. Excluding the catch, the clasp-half measures 32.2mm in length and 11.9mm in width. Hines dates Form B20 to the late fifth or sixth centuries AD. There are other examples from Suffolk, including parallels from Holywell Row, Ixworth, and Bury St Edmunds (Hines 1993, 65, fig 124). |
