Das Warenhaus am Neumarkt im Wuppertaler Stadtteil Elberfeld wurde im Auftrag der Leonhard Tietz AG als Mehrabteilungskaufhaus nach französischem Vorbild konzipiert, 1911/1912 gebaut und am 24. April 1912 eröffnet. Architekt war Wilhelm Kreis, der auch den Bismarckturm in Wuppertal entworfen hat.

Im Dritten Reich wurde das Kaufhaus Tietz wegen der jüdischen Herkunft der Inhaber als eines der ersten Unternehmen in Wuppertal Opfer antijüdischer Boykottaufrufe; es folgte die Enteignung und Arisierung. Bereits im Juli 1933 wurde die Leonhard Tietz AG auf Druck der NSDAP in "Westdeutsche Kaufhof AG" umbenannt.

Das im Krieg teilweise zerstörte Warenhaus wurde nach 1945 wieder aufgebaut. Die markante Sandsteinfassade am Neumarkt musste einer modernen Stahlkonstruktion weichen; die Nordfassade an der heutigen Neumarktstraße hingegen blieb erhalten.
