Title
X ray image showing detail of decoration
Description
English: Early medieval copper alloy mount, Thickness: 1 mm, diameter: 50 mm, weight: 34.56 grams. The object is circular in form and rectangular in cross section. It has a central circular hole 7mm in diameter and two small circular holes, c.2mm in diameter, to one side near its edge. It has two ciruclar prongs on its reverse side which sit on the opposite side to the holes, also near the edge. Its upper side is decorated with a solid raised border around its edge and the central hole. Between these the object is decorated with a raised design, which is largely obscured by corrosion and damage. It appears to be ribbon like interlace formed of curving raised lines incorporating a beaked creature with round eye which repeat in four quadrants. The object has traces of gilding around this decoration and its border.

Both the gilding and the decoration are clearly visible on the detailed X-ray attached. The pale lines are the gilding. XRF analysis confirmed the object is copper alloy with small amounts of tin.
