Description
English: Young women and children, Congo, ca. 1900-1915
  • Black and white lantern slide showing two young Congolsese women and two children, in Belgian colonial Congo Free State or post-1908 Belgian Congo (present day Democratic Republic of the Congo).
  • One woman sits, wearing a spotted European style dress. She wears a patterned cloth wrap around her head and holds two children on her knee. One child is slightly older than the other, and they both wear coloured smocks. Another woman stands next to her wearing a brightly patterned cloth wrap.
  • The group poses in front of a thatched dwelling with mud walls.
  • This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo-Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
