Schacht 12 des Steinkohlebergwerks Zollverein, erbaut 1928 bis 1932, war Vorbild gebend für viele Zechenanlagen des Ruhrgebietes. Die harmonische Gesamtkonzeption sowie die architektonische Ausgewogenheit von Schacht 12 ist aber nur ein Teil dieser Dokumentation. Zweiter Schwerpunkt ist die Aufbereitung der Rohförderkohle zu Nusskohle oder Kokskohle, die zusammen fast die Hälfte der Fördermenge ausmachen. Besonders interessant ist schließlich die Verwendung der Berge beim Haldenbau.
