Schotterwagen. Die Bayerische Zugspitzbahn gehört neben der Wendelsteinbahn, der Drachenfelsbahn und der Stuttgarter Zahnradbahn zu den vier noch betriebenen Zahnradbahnen Deutschlands. Die in Meterspur gebaute Strecke führt von Garmisch aus auf die Zugspitze, Deutschlands höchstem Berg. Die Bahn wurde in den Jahren 1928 bis 1930 erbaut. Von Garmisch aus führt die Strecke auf 7,5 km Länge mit Adhäsionsantrieb (ohne Zahnrad) nach Grainau. Im Bf. Grainau beginnt die steile Bergstrecke mit Zahnradantrieb. Früher wurden in Grainau die Tal-Loks (ohne Zahnradantrieb) und Berg-Loks (mit Zahnradantrieb) gewechselt. Die heutigen Triebwagen fahren durchgehend. Nach dem Haltepunkt Eibsee erreicht die Bahn die Station Riffelriss. Kurz danach beginnt der 4466 m lange Zugspitz-Tunnel zum Schneefernerhaus. Dort endete die Bahn in einem unterirdischen Endbahnhof. 1987 wurde die Strecke im Gipfelbereich ausgebaut und führt nun durch den »Rosi-Tunnel« (benannt nach der Skisportlerin Rosi Mittermaier – sie war Patin des Tunnels) zum tiefergelegenen Zugspitzplatt auf 2588 m Höhe. Die alte Strecke zum Schneefernerhaus wird fahrplanmäßig nicht mehr angefahren. Die Gesamtlänge der Strecke beträgt genau 19 km, davon 11,5 km als Zahnradbahn. |
