China map

[edit]

This map incorrectly includes Taiwan as part of China. Setting aside the political dispute, Taiwan has access to TikTok, and it is not banned there. WhinyTheYounger (talk) 16:34, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@WhinyTheYounger: Map shows Taiwan not as part of China (see colours, CHN is orange and Taiwan's red). Map is a vectorized vesrion of File:Countries where TikTok is and was banned.png, where it's shown as banned. A09 (talk) 19:26, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing out, my bad. Might be a case for switching orange to a more distinct color? Relatedly, Hainan island is erroneously not included as part of China, I just noticed. WhinyTheYounger (talk) 20:12, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@WhinyTheYounger: However, Hainan is so small on this scale I don't think making stripes (ie. orange-grey) is an option. I will fix colors later this day. Thanks for your response, A09 (talk) 15:45, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No stripes needed; Hainan is a full province of China (en:Hainan). WhinyTheYounger (talk) 16:31, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sorry, misread your previous comment. A09 (talk) 18:14, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Banned vs "not available because Douyin is used instead"

[edit]

1. Can someone explain the technical difference between TikTok being banned in a country and the app not being availible in a country? Is the difference that TikTok itself is only allowing users outside of china to use the app thus they are the one restricting access not the government of china (officially) or is there some other technical reason why TikTok isn't "banned" in China?

2. The "because Douyin is used instead" at the end on the label is unnecessarily opinionated. If that were the only reason it is not accessable there shouldn't be any reason for (China or TikTok) to prevent users in China from accessing the western version of the app if they wish to access that version of the app as well. This statement also gives the impression that TikTok and Douyin are interchangable such that TikTok not being avalible in China is only a techicality, however the two platforms are very different, have very different moderation and recommendation algorithms and content from one is not accessible on the other. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:600:9682:800:F11E:B743:E940:A082 (talk) 08:45, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

App cannot be Western if it was made by Chinese company. Did Chinese government prevent use of TikTok in China? A09 (talk) 14:31, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mean to imply the app is Western. I meant it has a Western audience. I also should of been a bit more concise and said non-Chinese audiance because there are many people in non-"Western" countries that also use the app.
"Did Chinese government prevent use of TikTok in China?"
I don't know if they have officially done so or have just had 3rd parties effectively banned it on their behalf. That's what I am asking. I want to know why the app is not accessable outside of china for a reason other then "Doujin is in China instead". Why can't TikTok also be accessed in China? Is it the Chinese government directly preventing TikTok from appearing on Chinese app stores? Did all Chinese app stores just all collectively agree not to host the app without any input from China? Does TikTok not allow their app from appearing on Chinese app stores? Obviously if the reason why TikTok is not accessible in the country is in any way a direct result of the Chinese government China should be included in the list of countries where TikTok is banned. 2601:600:9682:800:5BE:523B:2CFF:B1F5 00:30, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Does anybody here have any objections to me ether merging the "TikTok not available because Douyin is used instead, which is a heavily censored version of TikTok used in China." category into the "TikTok banned on public sector" catagory (or merging them both into a "TikTok blocked on public sector" if there is a difference between it being banned and blocked)? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:600:9682:800:40C2:40FB:5BB:FDBD (talk) 08:24, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Montana bans TikTok for all devices

[edit]

Montana bans TikTok for all devices. I can add it on the map but the US states need to be separated. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/04/14/tech/montana-house-tiktok-ban/index.html Axadem (talk) 21:15, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's also USA specific map. A09 (talk) 10:48, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It should be added as it is a total ban but it only goes into effect Jan 1, 2024 86.17.88.194 16:08, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About TikTok being banned in North Korea

[edit]

The sources do not confirm that TikTok is banned in North Korea. I myself looked for sources that TikTok is banned in North Korea and it did not say. So please change the colour of the North Korea map to grey. LDM2003 (talk) 12:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
