Misinformation

[编辑]

@NordNordWest: This map, while having its better qualities, likely led directly to the publishing of misinformation in the New York Times. [1] In this article, there is a map of Xinjiang with several cities labeled and a map of Xinjiang within China. In the second map of Xinjiang within China, the whole of Aksai Chin is included in Tibet rather than in Xinjiang. If they didn't get their information from this incorrect map, then where did they get it from? I can't stand by any longer my friends. This map must hidden from the Wikipedia mainspace. If an accurate map is ever created, then we can consider using it. We are misinforming not only the public, but we are misinforming the journalists at the New York Times who then use their authoritative status to misinform the public. When a correct map of the region is created (if it is ever created), then we can add that to the Wikipedia mainspace, but adding fake maps is just out of the question, sorry. --Geographyinitiative (留言) 21:26, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[回复]

Compare it to this map, which is currently in better shape: [2]. The Tibet maps are having similar factuality problems. --Geographyinitiative (留言) 21:32, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[回复]

Yes: if you look closely at that second map in the New York Times, you can see that the New York Times is telling its readers that the Trans-Karakoram Tract is a part of Tibet that borders Pakistan. Google didn't tell them that. It was us. But this is not only not true- in fact, it is demonstrably false. Tibet controls part of southern Aksai Chin, but doesn't come anywhere close to Kashgar Prefecture. I am appalled by this failure, but I am encouraged by the fact that I've noticed it and we will be getting it right from now on. The point of Wikipedia is to create a worthwhile encyclopaedia, not misinform people with nonsense. Geographyinitiative (留言) 21:45, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[回复]

I have hidden the map from twenty English Wikipedia mainspace pages. If that move is accepted by the community, I will proceed to remove the map from throughout Wikipedia mainspace. We can't pretend we have a map of Xinjiang when we have an obviously and blatantly inaccurate map. We have misled CNN and the New York Times with a "close enough for government work" level of mapping. The truth is that we really just don't have a map of Xinjiang yet. I have just now reverted the map to an earlier and more correct version that had been reverted saying: "only vector data in this svg please". Gobbledygook. We need a map of Xinjiang not gobbledygook about vector data.Geographyinitiative (留言) 05:34, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[回复]
@Geographyinitiative: Commons' policy, set out in COM:UPLOADWAR, is that if one editor thinks that a file isn't improved by being overwritten, that's enough to prevent it. In this case both NordNordWest (the original uploader) and Roy17 have clearly objected to your "improved" version of the file, and that should be enough for you to stop trying to overwrite it. If you want your modified version on Commons, upload it under a different name and update other pages to refer to your new version as appropriate. --bjh21 (留言) 17:45, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[回复]

(I dont usually bother replying to these stubborn chinese but for the sake of saving other users' time spent on dealing with these users:)

圖有錯,請自己改,或將錯誤寫出來。不會改SVG vector data,去COM:GLI請人幫忙。

For any mistakes, fix it yourself or write it down on talk pages. If you dont know how to modify a vector SVG, go to COM:GLI and ask for help there.--Roy17 (留言) 18:38, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[回复]

I can't change it (not skilled enough) and no one else has the ability and/or will to change it. But that doesn't mean it's accurate and should be used. It's a really bad map, and English Wikipedia can not include such a bad map, period. Hopefully one day a good map will be created, and at that time we can use that map. 10 June 2020 version

First of all, I am very glad that @NordNordWest: added the Kazakhstan-Russia border to this new version of the map. The user is a great map maker and I do not want to ask anything more from the user. However, the map is still woefully deficient.

  • If you will look at southern Aksai Chin, there's a little grey line. What's the grey line about? Well, it's the Xinjiang-Tibet border. So if that's the Xinjiang-Tibet border, why are both sides of that grey line colored the same color? The part of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract that are in Xinjiang need to be colored with Xinjiang or perhaps colored with stripped lines.
  • The China-Tajikistan border has changed
  • Kunyu, Xinjiang exists

I'm not saying NordNordWest needs to make these changes. The user is a volunteer, not my map-making slave. The point is that without these changes, the map is wildly inaccurate (especially the first change) and hence unusable on English Wikipedia. --Geographyinitiative (留言) 05:57, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[回复]

Example of an almost perfect map of Xinjiang: File:Administrative Division Xinjiang (PRC claimed).svg (this one is only missing the China-Tajikistan border adjustment- there may be other problems I am not yet sophisticated enough to detect) Geographyinitiative (留言) 06:51, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[回复]
@NordNordWest: The Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act is about to be signed into law, so don't come crying to me when the CNN articles' maps are wrong. Geographyinitiative (留言) 07:20, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[回复]
