Actually Mercator

[edit]

The projection shown is not just any cylindrical projection but specifically the Mercator projection. I thus think the labels on File:Comparison_of_Mercator_projections.svg are more precise. Any thoughts?

Since the cylinders don't have geographic features shown on them, I don't think this is specifically Mercator – it could represent any cylindrical projection. The other version is also correct, but there was an edit war on the Wikipedia Mercator page about whether to use "standard Mercator" or "Mercator with normal aspect", and I think the consensus is that "Mercator in normal aspect" is more widespread in the literature, so it's better to use that consistently (but it's a mouthful so to avoid changing the font size I removed the word "Mercator" from the image label). Light projection
You're correct. I was thinking of the model with a point light projecting shadows on the sheet, but the model doesn't show that, so can be any cylindrical projection. I also didn't know about the edit war.
In this case, I agree that your labels are better than mine. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 01:03, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
