Misidentification?[edit]

This species seems far to bright in colour to match the identification supplied. I propose a move to Category:Unidentified Cortinarius Wkee4ager (talk) 03:06, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Wkee4ager, Karsten11, and Sarefo: Hello. Note that File:Cortinarius.rubellus2.-.lindsey.jpg is the same mushroom. The name Cortinarius orellanoides is sometimes used as a synonym of this species, but C. rubellus is the current name according to Species Fungorum.
It is good to see critical evaluation of the identification of mushrooms in Commons. I think that File:Cortinarius.rubellus2.-.lindsey.jpg shows that the gills have a vivid red colour, which is characteristic of a small group of species such as Cortinarius semisangineus. I don't think that C. rubellus can be like that and so I agree with Wkee4ager that the identification is wrong. I am not sure whether Wkee4ager's comment meant the same thing. It is a pity that there is (as far as I can see) no indication which sort of tree the mushroom was under, and the stem is not in focus. I think that the actual species might be C. semisangineus or something closely related, but anyway I agree that Category:Unidentified Cortinarius is appropriate. By the way, many members of former genus Cortinarius have recently been reassigned to new genera (which were previously sub-genera), but the species mentioned here are still in Cortinarius. I have changed it now. Strobilomyces (talk) 15:35, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
