I sent an email to the Japanese MOFA and trying to get the Pantone colors. If that doesn't work, I'll bug some other people. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:35, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[回覆]

Border (from EN Wikipedia)[編輯]

Black border[編輯]

I think this image should be boardered by a black rectangle becuase currently the white of the flag merges with the white of the default monobook setting. HereToHelp (talk) 02:05, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[回覆]

We are using it in some infoboxes for videogame release dates and it tends to force the text to go on the next line when using the "}}" command. It is now considered a MUST to add a black border. Please modify the picture or we will have to make a second version for those who actually use it in wikipedia. Bragador 18:02, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[回覆]

The flag used for Japanese sister cities looks horrible due to the lack of border and the white Wikipedia background. The solution given in image file for this does not work for reduced images since the border goes around the image plus padding at the top. Wikipedia needs some kind of border style for the images that we can use in such cases. Notice that Wikipedia:Extended image syntax does not list any such option. Hi there guys, note that there's (at least) two options to get a border around your picture.
The first and the easiest is the following:

{{border|

Include the and or it won't work! That wil give the following effect: Secondly, when you use the "thumb" syntax, it will automatically include a grey border around the picture:

That wil give the following effect:

Flag of Japan

Black border without linebreak?[編輯]

Is there any way to get a border around an image without causing a linebreak? I tried using the template over on IRB Pacific 5 Nations but it caused an unwanted linebreak between the flag image and the Japan link. —Stormie 22:49, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[回覆]

The colours are outdated and the sources aren't helping![編輯]

So I was just browsing the website of the government of Japan, and I saw these colours for the Japanese flag.[1]

I did this whilst I was looking at the colours shown on Wikipedia. Turns out they're outdated.

The source in Japanese is dead, the source in English gives the colours seen on JapanGov, and the upload description saying the site where they got the red from is dead. Even the other red's source is dead.

How hasn't this been noticed, and shouldn't it be changed by now? Kxeon (對話) 00:47, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[回覆]

@Kxeon: Arrived here after your messages on COM:DISCORD. "Outdated" is a bold statement here, and is far from the truth. You mention those links as dead, but that's not the case — archives of these sources are available on the Internet Archive. So first, let's just find out where the color is from anyway:
 • Although http://www.mod.go.jp/j/info/nds/siyousyo/dsp_list_j.htm#Z8701 is dead, it is available on the Internet Archive, albeit heavily mangled. This happens because IA sends the HTML file as UTF-8, but the page is actually encoded in Shift JIS. Downloading the actual page will allow you to view it, and you'll find out the link sends you to DSP Z 8701E, a Ministry of Defense Specification sheet.
 • That MOD document can be found at https://www.mod.go.jp/j/procurement/chotatsu/nds/pdf/z/z8701.pdf, but it's also a dead link. Luckily, Internet Archive also keeps a copy, and can be found here. Beneath all the text, they provide the specific color "5.7R 3.7/15.5" for acrylic, "6.2R 4/15.2" for nylon. In this case, the red color for acrylic is used.
 • The notation "5.7R 3.7/15.5" is based on the JIS Z 8721. Because it had amendments in 2019, we'll assume that we're using the version published in 1993. This document is paid, however, and I'm not willing to shell out $128.00 for colors (especially for reasons stated later on). To make life easier, we'll assume this refers to the Munsell color system.
 • This tool indicates that our exact color is actually rgb(186,0,37), or      #ba0025. But this file uses      #bc002d. So what gives?
In reality, the Munsell color system was meant for physical objects. It's always going to be a challenge converting Munsell to sRGB (i.e., computer colors) since they fall into different color systems and accuracy sometimes gets compromised in the name of displaying things on a computer screen. Officially, there is no sRGB definition for the Hinomaru's Red Sun. The most authoritative source, of course, is the Act on National Flag and Anthem, which, lo-and-behold, defines the "red" color as 「紅色」(beni iro, crimson) and not 「赤色」(aka iro, [bright] red). For all intents and purposes, any crimson color will do.      #bc002d happens to be the color we use on Wikipedia, since it's based on an official specification from the Japanese government, and because it shows a color close to what the color should look like on a physical flag. More history on the flag's color can be found on en:Flag of Japan § Design.
P.S. This also differs from the JIS definition of beni iro, which has a Munsell code of      "3R 4/14". But it is still closer to crimson and not the      #ff2b22 you linked to. The same goes with the "other red's source" (archived), which uses      #be0027. Chlod (say hi!) 14:36, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
