Shade of blue[编辑]

It seems that in real life photos of the flag, the shade of blue is darker. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

While the law does not stipulate an exact shade, it seems that Britannica states a darker shade of blue than the UN blue was actually adopted after the compact of free association, though this is not backed by the image they are using. Any thoughts? Seloloving (留言) 14:55, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[回复]

The book flag lore of all nations published by the professional vexillologist Whitney Smith has an image of the darker blue used, while the shade used in Complete flags of the world is 388ccb. Seloloving (留言) 03:33, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[回复]

It seems there's really no consistent standard in the shade even amongst diplomatic and FSM use. 1 2 3 I am thus far unable to find an original source for the light blue shade. Seloloving (留言) 08:03, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[回复]

Actually, the use of light blue dates to at least 2002 [11], when Željko Heimer, perhaps unaware of the change, showed the flag background as light blue. The London 2012 Flags and Anthems Manual has light blue too.
But Alfred Znamierowski shows the dark blue. SVG-image-maker (留言) 00:52, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[回复]
Also the UN headquarters (as of 2010) used dark blue. [12] SVG-image-maker (留言) 00:55, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[回复]

Looking at the FSM Office of the President Facebook page, the flag color ranges from the lighter blue shown here to some darker shades. The recent Citizens Budget document leans towards the lighter shade on the cover and on page 5. The flag statue is silent on the specific shade, just saying blue. —Tcr25 (留言) 20:26, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]

(Copying over a longer comment from en:Talk:Federated States of Micronesia: Code of the Federated States of Micronesia, Title I, Chapter 5 gives the official legal definition for the flag's design:

There shall be and there is hereby adopted an official flag of the Federated States of Micronesia, which shall consist of a circle of four white stars centered on a field of blue. The width of the flag of the Federated States of Micronesia shall bear a ratio to its length of 1 to 1.9, and the width of the flag to the width of a star the ratio of five to one. The flag may be reproduced for unofficial purposes, with different dimensions.

There is no specific definition for the shade of blue to be used. A paper presented at the 24th International Congress of Vexillology (2011) notes that during a 2009 visit to Pohnpei and Chuuk, multiple shades of blue were seen for the FSM national flag at different government agencies and installations with the difference attributed "probably due to differences in flag manufacturers." (Lupant, Michel R. (2011) From the Trust Territory of Pacific to the Federated States of Micronesia in Proceedings of the 24th International Congress of Vexillology. Washington, D.C.: North American Vexillological Association. pp. 702–705)
Evidence for official support for a lighter shade of blue is found in the Olympic Flags and Anthem Manual, most recently the one for the 2020 Games in Tokyo. As part of its process, the organizing committee submits to each national Olympic committee images and samples of the nation's flag that the committee intends to use. The NOC then approves or requests changes. The main stipulation for the IOC is that every flag must follow the same proportions (so Switzerland's flag becomes rectangular and Nepal's maintains its shape, but with white cloth added for the area not filled by the Nepalese flag). The colors and design (other than shape and proportions) have the approval of the country's authorities. The FSM flag can be seen on page 117 of the manual with a lighter shade of blue that my graphics program identifies as #17B0E3   . The manual for the 2012 Games in London specified that the approved flag color is PMS 277   .
This is all a long and roundabout way of saying that 1) there seems to be no officially defined shade of blue for the FSM flag, 2) that the FSM government appears to use flags from a variety of manufacturers in various official contexts without regard to the shade of blue used, and 3) there is evidence for at least some official sanction for a lighter hue even if it isn't officially defined. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 14:59, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]
