Which is the original for Nrol-39

[edit]

@Adam Cuerden and HectorMoffet:
HectorMoffet wrote on this Nothing is beyond our reach "There are still some issues with this vector: For example, the original has latitude lines and a different shading scheme that are not in this version. It should probably not be used until these are fixed."
This all depends on which "original" you use as base, I used two images and combined them together;

If the latitude lines is surely to be added I will do so and for the shading you would have to be a bit more specific. To compare shading from scans of different original, prints, stitched things and say which is RIGHT is not easy as all presentation technics have there limitations.

Actually, they ARE there, they're just harder to see. https://twitter.com/ODNIgov/status/408712553179533312/photo/1/large has thinner latitude/longitude lines, but they're still present. It also outlines the continents, has a very different looking tentacle detail, different lines in the eye area, and so on. If you can get a high-resolution version of an official image such as that one, and perfectly imitate it, I'd accept it, but it looks like every line on the patch is also on that, albeit with a different line weight, whereas many lines are missing on the vector. I saw the lat long lines now and added them. The outlines of the continents was already there but I made them more visible.
Even if we did have a high resolution image of what was the original you can NEVER make a 100% copy, it will always be a version of that depending on what technique you are using and skill/time, e.a. what the purpose of making the version is.
I can't really see all of the other things you mention but the continents themselfs are also different. Regarding thickness visibility of lines and other things this is always very depending on the technique you are using. Like the stitched on, they can't do thinner lines so they have to be that thick.
So this is also one of the reasons that there only can be ONE original the rest is versions of that. Then it is up to the creator and user to decide how it should look compared with the original and how it should be used.
This was never set out to be a 100% copy of which no is the ORIGINAL. This is a svg version based on the base material to work from that was present, the skill of me as the creator, the amount of time I thought was OK to put in to it and what the requester asked for. How it will be used or edited is up to who ever wants to use it or edit it. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:46, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
