The names of the slottslän

[edit]

I find the names used odd.

I suppose "SL" is meant as an abbrevision of "slottslän". However, e.g. Viipuri slottslän mixes languages: in Swedish it would be Viborgs slottslän, in Finnish Viipurin linnalääni.

Is this the nomenclature used in English? The Wikipedia article uses "slottslän" instead of "castle fief" or somesuch, as that was what they were called at the time. But the image also uses Finnish names such as Viipuri and the Swedish name for Korsholm and Kastelholm, where Swedish is the main language. This is the current practice, but at the time Swedish was the only administrative language, and I suppose that when the slottsläns later were discussed in Finnish, the Finnish names, such as "Kastelholman linnalääni" were used.
