[edit]

I understand (now) this is simply a boiler made by Thornycroft as distinct from a boiler made to their patented design. I can't quite get my head around how to separate them so the difference is easily seen by editors unfamiliar with the problem. I can invent something like:

Category:Boilers made to Thornycroft patented designs
Category:Boilers made by Thornycroft
Any better solutions? If I do as I suggest above it is not so very difficult to change when the Commons orthodox categorisation mode is discovered.

Thornycroft boilers is a WP:Notable topic with a redirect to a relevant section. They have a clear definition and this name meets WP:COMMONNAME.
Other boilers, made by Thornycroft, are far less significant. We have only two images and there is no great supply of others. They are of two quite unrelated designs. One is a very typical small locomotive boiler, as used for many steam wagons and tractors. It's undistinguished from those of other makers. The vertical boiler is a more distinct Thornycroft type, but even there it would be hard to claim it as a WP:NOTABLE type. I see no pressing need to create a category for "Boilers made by Thornycroft" other than the two we have. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:59, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
