Image of the basin of Lake Nyasa. Livingstonia, which was founded in 1894 by missionaries from the Free Church of Scotland, is marked on the map.; Lake Nyasa, which is also known as Lake Malawi, is the southern most lake in the Great Rift Valley system of East Africa. It is the third largest lake in Africa and the eighth largest lake in the world.
