Nederlands: Deze valiha, die oorspronkelij uit Zuid Oost Azië. komt , is een van de oudste instrumenten op Madagascar en is daar een symbool van de culturele identiteit geworden.
De valiha werd aanvankelijk gespeeld bij rituelen van religieuse aard maar wordt tegenwoordig ook voor wereldlijke muziek gebruikt. Volgens traditionele orale bronnen zou de valiha, met name in Imerina, oorspronkelijk in adelijke kringen worden bespeeld en dan uitsluitend door mannen. Tegenwoordig is het zeer gebruikelijk dat de valiha door een vrouw wordt bespeeld. |
