Description

Chromian jade from the Jurassic of Burma. (4.5 cm across at its widest)

This gorgeous green rock is chromian jade (maw sit sit), a complex metamorphic rock dominated by chromian jadeite pyroxene (Na(Al,Fe,Cr)(SiO3)2 - sodium aluminum iron chromium silicate). This is a high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphite formed at the rim of serpentinized chromiferous mantle peridotite.

Geologic unit & age: northeastern Hpakan-Tawmaw Jade Tract, Hpakan Ultramafic Body, Naga-Andaman Ophiolite (= metamorphosed Mesozoic oceanic lithosphere), 147 Ma metamorphic age (late Tithonian, near-latest Jurassic)

Locality: attributed to Tawmaw, Myitkyina-Mogaung District, western Kachin State, Indo-Burma Range, northern Burma
