Atlantic coast, Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo, showing the forms limiting the range of color variability: A male, carapace width (CW) 39 mm B male, CW 29 mm C female, CW 32 mm D male, CW 44 mm E male, CW 47 mm F female, CW 33 mm. Pacific coast (often recognized as a separate species, Gecarcinus quadratus): Costa Rica, Playa Hermosa: G male, CW 58 mm H male, CW 38 mm.
