Description

A lion guards the northern entrance to Karatepe.

Karatepe is a Neo-Hittite site in Cilicia which has been turned into an open air museum. After the Hittite empire fell towards the end of the 13th century BC. However, Hittite influence continued with a number of petty kingdoms claiming authority via the Hittite name. Asitawata, the ruler of Karatepe, claimed ancestry from the house of Mopsus, but the site shows evidence of Greek influence and some of the inscriptions seem to refer to the Danuna/Danauna, who may be associated with the Greek Danaoi described by Homer in the Iliad. Karatepe is the summer palace of King Asitawata in the 8th century.
