Description
Deutsch: Sternberg (Gomadingen, Schwäbische Alb), süd-östlicher Hang, Gewann Lerchenberg.

Einer von inzwischen 356 nachgewiesenen, schon im Obermiozän erloschenen Vulkanen des Typs "Schwäbischer Vulkan" des Urach-Kirchheimer Vulkangebiets. Effusivgestein, zumeist aber nur basaltische Tuffe führende Vulkanschlote stauen Wasser und geben es in der Umgebung ab. In einigen Fällen blieben die Tuffe noch im Schlot stecken oder sanken sogar zurück. Selten wurden darüberliegende Kalkschichten vollständig weggesprengt.

Auf den Hängen des Steinberg-Kegels liegen Sedimente des Weißen Juras, die, weil sie verkarsteten, in diesem Fall zahlreiche Dolinen geschaffen haben.

The mountain is one of the 356 volcanos within the Urach-Kirchheimer Vulkangebiet, already extinct in Upper Miocene.

In most cases the basaltic tuff kept stuck in the volcanic pipe, not completely destroying the limestone beds above. Thus, the karstic limestone is drastically perforated by dolines.
