Description |
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Porter (DD-356) off Yorktown, Virginia (USA), on 19 April 1939. This photo illustrates the original "cruiser-like" appearance of the Porter-class. This class was the only U.S. Navy destroyer class fitted with reserve torpedoes, visible in the containers next to the aft funnel and the aft superstructure. However, with a displacement of 1850 tons, this class was severly overweight. The reserve torpedoes and the aft mast were removed before the war, later, the forward mast was replaced by a pole mast and the No. 3 gun turret was removed. Three ships were eventually rebuilt late in the war to overcome the topweight and were also fitted with dual purpose guns. |
