Authorship claim[edit]

@JohnLaunois: I have reverted your rename request and copied the claim here—that the photo is by John Launois (Black Star Photo Agency) for Life Magazine, 1960 - © The Estate of John Launois—because evidence will be needed to contradict the provenance information on file (and at any rate we avoid putting that sort of detail in filenames). How do you explain that the NOAA attributes the photo to “Steve Nicklas, NOS, NGS” on the source page? Any evidence involving personal information that you’d prefer not to discuss in public may be submitted to COM:OTRS (See the last item under “Licensing images: when do I contact OTRS?”) for confidential investigation.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:28, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@JohnLaunois: thanks for the details, but I don’t see this picture in that article. The one on page 113, immediately above the title, is very similar, and quite possibly taken at nearly the same time, but it‘s not identical. The camera appears to be farther from the hatch, the background is much less exposed (darker), and Piccard’s posture is different. At the moment it seems most likely to me that there were (at least) two photographers recording the event.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:56, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the information. We will submit additional proof to COM:OTRS.— Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnLaunois (talk • contribs)

@JohnLaunois: thanks again; that is probably your best course. Please understand I have no reason to doubt your sincerity, but since the image is being used to illustrate articles on numerous Wikimedia projects, its removal would be a matter of some gravity. With respect, I also have no way of knowing whether or not you are an authentic representative of the estate; one consequence of the site’s policy of user anonymity is that there are opportunities for impersonators to cause trouble. However, it is also very important that all the content hosted here be free for reuse, and we do take the rights of authors seriously. I am not an OTRS agent, so I can’t help directly there, but I hope you obtain a satisfactory result. (I would be happy to start a community deletion discussion if you wish, but I believe it would be unlikely to succeed if based solely on the above.) Please be advised that you also have the option of a more formal or legalistic approach, namely sending a DMCA takedown request to the designated agent here, as mentioned at COM:Contact us/Problems.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:13, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. If you like, I will let you know what happens. Thank you again for the helpful information.
