Missing label

[edit]

@M.Bitton: It looks like you deleted the label for the Rub' al Khali Desert in Saudi Arabia. Just wondering if that was on purpose. Also I was curious how you updated the other labels since they are saved as shapes rather than text. I would be happy to help keep the map up to date if there is a relatively easy way to do it. @Kaldari: Yes, I deleted it and forgot to copy the new coloured label from the 2021 map (the original black version was too prominent). Updating the text was done through trial and error: I started by editing File:Map of the world by the US Gov as of 2016 no legend.svg, but the final result was less than satisfactory; so I opted for editing the original pdf version (which reminds me that I need to update the sources) that I then converted to svg, resized to 1920px and optimized using Inkscape. Optimization turned up to be the biggest headache as the generated thumbnails (on Commons) for the maps that had been aggressively optimized looked a right mess. Hope that helps and thank you for the offer. Best, M.Bitton (talk) 14:55, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@M.Bitton: Yeah, I pretty much gave up on using SVG optimization due to rendering issues. What optimization settings in Inkscape did you end up settling on? It looks like the settings you used worked well. Also, what program are you using to edit the PDF? Acrobat? Kaldari (talk) 18:49, 16 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaldari: I ended up using scour's default values (shorten colour values, convert CSS attributes, collapse groups, create groups for similar attributes, work around render bugs). For simple text manipulation such as this, you'll find that all pdf editors are equal. M.Bitton (talk) 23:31, 17 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
