Who made this recording? Who published it, who was the composer, who were the performers, and who was the director? When did the composer live? If it's a movie, also indicate when the director lived.

Date: Give the year this work was created and/or first published. If you don't know when the first publication was, give the year the work was created, and the year of the publication you got it from.

If the file is a photo of some artwork, please also give the year this artwork was created and/or published.

For compositions, also give the year the composition was first published.

File changes: Describe the changes you made to the file you will overwrite. This will appear as the edit summary in the file history. A description is mandatory.

For instance, if you've cropped away a border, say so. Or if you're uploading a larger, but otherwise identical, version of the already existing file, write "Larger version from ", followed by the source of the new version.

Your description will appear as an edit summary; it will not appear on the file description page itself! If the new version comes from a different source, or has a different author or license, please also update the file description page after the upload.

If the new version you want to upload differs substantially from the already existing file, it is almost always better to upload the file under a new name instead of overwriting the existing file.

License: The Commons accepts only media that either

are explicitly licensed under a free license such as the GFDL, the Creative Commons licenses {{Cc-by-4.0}} or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, or similar free licenses, or
are in the public domain both in the U.S. and in the source country of the work.

The most common license and copyright status descriptions are listed in this drop-down menu. Choose the one that applies to your file, if you haven't already placed a copyright tag in the "Permission" field above. See also Commons:Licensing.

Watch this: Select this checkbox if you want to add the newly uploaded file to your watchlist.

Ignore warnings: Select this checkbox if you want to upload right away, skipping any warnings about overwriting an existing file or about uploading a very large file. (Note, however, that PNG files larger than 12.5 million pixels currently cannot be rendered as thumbnails.)

Categories: Add categories to your file to make it easier to find it. Click on the "(+)" link to add a new category; if you have Ajax enabled, you will even get suggestions for existing categories as you type. If you want to change a category you have added, click the "(±)" link, and to remove an already added category, click on "(-)".

License: The Commons accepts only media that are explicitly licensed under a free license, or that are in the public domain. Only upload images from Flickr if the Flickr page states that the image was licensed under the Creative Commons licenses {{Cc-by}}, {{Cc-by-sa}}, or {{Cc-pd}}.

Caveats:

Most Flickr image pages contain a statement "This image is public". This is not a copyright statement. It just means that the image can be viewed by anyone.
The copyright statement at Flickr is a line saying "© All rights reserved" or "Some rights reserved" or "No known copyright restrictions".
- If it says "All rights reserved", the image is not freely licensed, and must not be transferred to the Commons.
- If it says "Some rights reserved", click on that text (it's a hyperlink). This takes you to a license page explaining the licensing conditions for that image. If that license says anything about "non-commercial" or "no derivative", it's not a free license, and the image must not be moved to the Commons. If it only mentions "attribution" or "share-alike", then it's basically ok. But check our image casebook to see whether it really might be acceptable here.
- If it says "No known copyright restrictions", the Flickr image is in the Flickr Commons. Such files may also be uploaded here. (For such images that come from the U.S. Library of Congress, it may be worthwhile though to get an even higher resolution image from the library's own repository. Check the "persistent URL".)
Please note that Flickr, like the Commons, allows anyone to upload any image. As a result, there may be wrongly licensed images on Flickr. Always think about whether the Flickr user has correctly licensed the image. For instance, if it's a screenshot, the Flickr user does not own the copyright and thus cannot license the image freely. See our guidelines and hints on some help on this.
