Surfing was first recognized by Western civilization through British Captain James Cook, the first known haole. Cook arrived in the Hawaiian Islands during the mid 1700's, and noticed the locals riding waves on boards specifically made for surfing. The next big step leading to the proliferation of surfing is credited to the great Hawaiian Duke kahanamoku, sharing the sport of surfing with the world.
