Louisiana purchase[edit]

  • Change color of France, Why the Louisiana is colored like Spain before 1803 (the Louisiana purchase)?
  • Not sure what your question is. France gained control of the land that made up the Louisiana purchase in 1800. It then turned around and sold it to America in 1803. As for the color, it used to be blue but that was too close to America so it was changed to a neutral color. --

Province of Canada[edit]

Wounderful map! But Lower and Upper Canada merged into the Province of Canada between 1841 and 1867. The border between should be erased during that period. Can someone fix it?

Error in 1845-1850 IA/WI/MN sequence[edit]

  • What is shown in error: Iowa becomes a state and the rest of Iowa Territory becomes Unorganized (merges with the rest of Unorganized Territory) in 1846, Wisconsin becomes a State and the rest of Wisconsin Territory becomes Unorganized (merges with the rest of Unorganized Territory) in 1848, Minnesota Territory carved out of Unorganized Territory in 1849.
  • What it should instead show: Iowa becomes a state and the rest of Iowa Territory becomes Unorganized (merges with the rest of Unorganized Territory) in 1846, Wisconsin becomes a State in 1848, residual Wisconsin Territory dissolved and merges with portion of Unorganized Territory that was part of Iowa Territory to from Minnesota Territory in 1849.

Vandalism[edit]

I am removing all 31 edits done by User:68.192.164.253, dated from 2008-10-04 to 2008-11-05. The two previous attempts at removing vandalism (2008-10-16 and earlier today 2008-11-15) were only partially successful. For the record, this user was already blocked at English Wikipedia on 2008-10-12, but continued to vandalize Wikimedia Commons after that, especially this page. All future contributions from this user need to be watched carefully. --HYC (talk) 19:19, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Verification needed[edit]

Some contributions from IP 68.192.164.253, dated 2008-10-04 to 2008-10-08, appear to be legitimate (diff), though all contributions from 2008-10-13 through 2008-11-05 are clearly vandalism. Accordingly, I am restoring the following paragraphs (with small inter-wiki link corrections), but fact checking from other editors would be greatly appreciated. --HYC (talk) 21:26, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1791
The Vermont Republic, which had portions claimed by New York and New Hampshire and, while unrecognized by the United States, was a de facto independent country, was admitted as the 14th state, Vermont.
1792
The western counties of Virginia beyond the Appalachian Mountains were split off and admitted as the 15th state, Kentucky.
1803
The southeastern portion of Northwest Territory was admitted as the 17th state, Ohio. The remainder of Northwest Territory was transferred to Indiana Territory.
The Louisiana Purchase was made, expanding the United States west of the Mississippi River. There was a dispute with West Florida over how much land east of the Mississippi River it included. The purchase extended slightly north of the modern borders, as it was defined only as the watershed of the Mississippi River. The purchase consisted of the whole of present-day Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, and portions of Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. It also included the southernmost portions of the present-day Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
1828
Arkansas Territory was shrunk further, attaining the present-day borders of Arkansas, with the remainder again becoming unorganized, excepting the land it still claimed as Miller County.
1867
The Dominion of Canada was formed from three provinces of British North America: the Province of Canada, which was split into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
1870
The United Kingdom ceded most of its remaining land in North America to Canada: Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory became the North-West Territories. The Rupert's Land Act of 1868 transferred the region to Canada as of 1869, but it was only consummated in 1870 when £300,000 were paid to the Hudson's Bay Company. At this time, the Manitoba Act took effect, and a small square of this surrounding the city of Winnipeg was made the province of Manitoba.
1903
The Alaska boundary dispute is resolved by arbitration, generally favoring the American claim.
1917
With the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution, the territory of Tepic had its name and status changed to the state of Nayarit.
1931
The territory of Baja California was split into North Territory of Baja California and South Territory of Baja California.
1952
The North Territory of Baja California changed its status and became the state of Baja California.
1974
The territory of Quintana Roo changed into a state status became a state. The South Territory of Baja California changed its status and became the state of Baja California Sur, giving Mexico its present-day configuration.

Gasden?[edit]

France after 1803[edit]

The French possessions after 1803 are unnoticeable. Either they are not represented on the map and the key is incorrect, or the French possessions should be made more noticeable. -- Dynex811 04:28, 12 April 2009

Following the French defeat in the French and Indian War France was forced out of North America except for the tiny islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon off the Canadian coast, retained as a fishing outpost. The islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon were France's only remaining possessions north of the Caribbean. On the map they're shown on the 1763 map but after that they're too small to be seen. -- Esemono (talk) 04:18, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sverdrup Islands[edit]

Excellent map, although ive noticed one anomoly. The Sverdrup Islands are marked as belonging to britain before being ceded to canada with the rest of the British Arctic Islands, however they were not discovered until 1898. They remained unclaimed until Norway claimed them in 1928, and then ceded them to Canada in 1930. Should they not be marked as unclaimed in the map until 1928?XavierGreen (talk) 21:44, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
