This template should only be used for instances where the Ulster Banner is used in reliable sources as the flag of Northern Ireland. Typically, these are sport-related articles, such as those involving the Northern Ireland national football team or its players, athletes competing for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, golfers from Northern Ireland, etc.
Use Template:noflag to correctly align text in lists of nations with flag icons, but for which a flag for Northern Ireland would be inappropriate. For example:
