Cllr Alan Gammon


Alan Gammon was born in Streatham South London in January 1955. He attended Glenbrook Infant School Clapham, Fenstanton Junior Mixed School Clapham. He moved to Sutton Surrey in December1963 and attended Cheam Park Farm Junior School and then went onto Sutton West High School in Clyde Road in September 1966. At 16 years old he left school in 1971 after staying on for an extra year. He joined the London Daily Express in Fleet Street as a Messenger Boy and progressed to Administration in Beaverbrook Library where he worked under the Late Political Historian Prof A J P Taylor. His interest grew from there meeting various politicians of the day including Lord Robens the Minister for Coal. He in 1973 presented the Daily Express Yachting Trophy to Prime Minister Edward Heath.


Alan worked in various industries during the turbulent 70's, public sector, Civil Service, manufacturing and public transport where he served more than 30 years in service and management. Alan married in 1977 and had 2 children.


He initially stood for Mole Valley District Council in 1994 in Ashtead Park and was defeated by an Independent. Notwithstanding this he stood in 1999 for Arun District Council in Rustington North and was beated by just a handful of votes by the LibDems. In 2003 brought two wins for Alan Gammon a seat on Littlehampton Town Council and Arun District Council in Brookfield Ward. Determined to get on, in 2005 he returned to college and gained Accountancy qualifications passing with distinction. This became a strong string to his bow.

In 2007 the Conservative Party won 6 seats in Littlehampton and Alan became group leader on Littlehampton Town Council. That year he was also elected Deputy Mayor Mayor-Elect. In May 2008 he took the chain for the first time to Mayor of Littlehampton. During that year he put three proposals forward, to introduce an open market to the town, the Food Larder and to reinstate the ferry on the River Arun. All three have come to fruition and the ferry will shortly be working on the river.


In May 2011 The Conservatives took control of Littlehampton Town Council and he was subsequently re-elected Mayor, as before, determined to be accessible to the public as possible, he has continued with the 'Mayor at Home' monthly surgery and formed The Mayors' Charity Fund.


2003 Alan served on, Licencing & Enforcement, Housing Planning and Community Care Scrutiny and the Audit Committee (Vice Chair).

2006 Chair of the PPI Forum monitoring the NHS. Arun Community Hospital Forum.

2007 Development Control, Overview Scrutiny, Performance Scrutiny (Vice Chair) Littlehampton Regeneration Sub Committee, Environment Working Party and Clean & Safe Working Party and North Littlehampton Steering Group.

Arun Sunshine Group Treasurer. Provides respite for people who cares for someone with learning difficulties.

Littlehampton and District Citizen's Advice Bureau, Generallist Adviser, to give advice on an array of matters including Housing, Family, Debt, Benefits and Employment.

In 2014 Gammon wrote The Benjamin Gray Story, it is about a man that lived in Littlehampton and emigrated to Australia in 1838 and planned and built a new village and named it after his home town.

2015 He devised a database that registered mobility scooters to help to protect them from being stolen.

2018 Gammon became Chairman of Arun District Council
