English: Bronze Zun (wine storeage vessel) *Eastern Zhou Dynasty *Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 B.C.) *Excavated at Sanmenxia, Henan Province, 1956 Shaped like an animal with upright ears, this vessel has short legs and a short tail, with a dou-like cup on its back serving as an opening. The surface and the body are both decorated with a cloud pattern.

English: White Pottery Gui (pitcher) * Shandong Longshan Culture * Late Neolithic Period (ca. 2500 - 2000 B.C.) * Excavated at Rizhao, Shandong Province "White pottery" is the name for a type of pottery which features a white body and surface. This pitcher was used for storing and boiling liquid, and its shape indicates that pottery making during the Late Neolithic Period was surprisingly skilled.

Jade Cong *Liangzhu Culture *Neolithic Period (3300 - 2200 B.C.) From the lower Yangzi River Valley, this cong was used in rituals of worship; it has a square outside, symbolizing earth, and round inside, symbolizing heaven. A medium used the cong to communicate with the spirits of heaven and earth. Most congs have been found in large, elaborate tombs, and were likely owned by nobles.

English: Jade Disk *Liangzhu Culture *Neolithic Period (3300 - 2200 B.C.) *Excavated at Yuhang, Zhejiang Province Symbolizing heaven, such disks were ritual objects - this particular disk is a symbol of weath, military power, and religious authority. Most such disks have been found in tombs belonging to high officials and aristocrats, and required much skill and patience to produce; this disk's rough shape suggests it was hastily produced for burial purposes.

English: Bronze Battle Axe *Shang Dynasty {1600 - 1046 B.C.) *Excavated at Yidu, Shangdong Province, 1956 This axe was used in hand-to-hand combat, and was also a ritual object symbolizing power and military authority. The tomb it came from likely belonged to a man of wealth and influence.

Bronze Zun (wine storeage vessel) *Shang Dynasty (1600 - 1046 B.C.) *Excavated at Funan, Anhui Province, 1957 Three dragons adorn the shoulder of this vessel, and three tigers can be found in relief on the upper belly. The complex ornamentation idicates the high level of bronze-casting technique achieved at this point in time.

English: Bronze Li (cooking tripod) *Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 - 771 B.C.) The belly of this cooking tripod are decorated with animal faces and an ox head with protruding eyes. The bronze li first appeared during the Shang Dynaty, and beame popular during the Western Zhou Period, but declined during the period of the Warring States.

English: Bronze Ding of Ren (cooking vessel) *Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 - 771 B.C.) Cooking vessels such as this were also ritual objects, symbolizing power and wealth; the number of dings allowed in a burial was regulated according to official position and social status. An inscription inside this ding records that an important man named Ren received gifts from the King of Zhou - in return, Ren had this vessel made to commemorate the viture and morality of the Zhou king.

English: Bronze Gui of Shi You (food container) *Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 - 771 B.C.) The lid and body of this container are both decorated with tile and ring patterns. They feature engraved inscriptions, which record that the King of Zhou gave a fifedom to Shi You, ordering that he inherit the title as well as the land and people living there.

English: Triangular pointed tool *Middle Paleolithic Period (70,000 B.P.) *Excavated at Diingcun, Xiangfeng, Shanxi Province, 1954 Made from a large flake of hornfels (a type of metamorphic rock) with the back shaped into a sharp ridge, this tool was used to dig up plant and tree roots.

English: Stone scraper *Early Paleolithic Period (500,000 B.P. *Excavated at Zhoukoudian, Beijing, 1966 A two-edged flint scraper used by Peking men to cut vegetation and scrape flesh off animal skins.

English: Black Pottery Cauldron *Hemudu Culture *Neolithic Period (ca. 5000 - 3000 B.C.) *Excavated at Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, 1973 The Hemudu Culture, which was located along the lower reaches of the Yangzi River, formed these cooking cauldrons from built-up layers of clay flakes, which were decorated with an overlapping rope pattern. They were placed over open fires.

English: Millstone and Roller *Peiligang Culture *Neolithic Period (ca. 5500 - 5000 B.C.) *Excavated at Xinzheng, Henan Province, 1979 A simple block of stone with a flattened surface was used as a millstone, on which the bar was rolled to grind millet and grain into flour. Grains could also be threshed through this process, as it separated husks and chaff from edible parts of the grain.

English: Large Gray Mug *Henan Longshan Culture *Late Neolithic Period (ca. 2500 - 2000 B.C.) *Excavated at Zhengzhou, Henan Province, 1955 Made on a pottery wheel along the middle to lower reaches of the Yellow River. The shape of this cup's mouth indicates it may have once had a cover, and the proportional melon rind decoration suggests the potters of this culture understood the concept of dividing objects into equal parts.

English: Pottery Ding (Cooking Vessel) *Yangshao Culture *Neolithic period (ca. 5000 - 3000 B.C.) This ding, made by the Yangshao Culture located along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, is decorated with a string pattern, and heated quickly.

Water Jar *Yangshao Culture *Neolithic Period (ca. 5000 - 3000 B.C.) *Excavated at Baoji, Shaanxi Province, 1958 Ropes of clay were used to build this vessel, then were smoothed out and decorated. It was used to draw water from wells and rivers, lowered on ropes threaded through its handles; when empty its center of gravity would cause it to tip forward, and when full it would return to its upright position.

English: Painted Jar *Majiayao Culture *Late Neolithic Period (3300 - 2200 B.C.) Created by peoples of the Majiayao Culture, who were located along the upper reaches of the Yellow River, this jar would have stored food or water. The body is painted in typical Majiayao pottery colours of orange, yellow, and black, and features whirlpool designs that suggest the Neolithic Chinese used water patterns as a form of decoration.

Boat-Shaped Pot *Yangshao Culture *Neolithic Period (ca. 5000 - 3000 B.C.) The black fishnet design on this vessel, which was used to draw water, suggests that the Neolithic Chinese were already using nets to catch fish, as well as using the motif as a decorative pattern.

English: Black Pottery Goblet *Shandong Longshan Culture *Late Neolithic Period (ca. 2500 - 2000 B.C.) *Excavated at Jiaoxian, Shandong Province, 1975 This goblet, made from a particularly thin material known as "eggshell pottery", was made in separate parts- stem and body were produced independantly and then fitted together. Wet firewood was added to the kiln during firing at a relatively low tempurature, resulting in carbon from the resulting smoke permeating the pottery and turning it black.
