One day I was browsing Wikipedia and noticed that there wasn't a map of the prefectures of Japan. Sure, there was a map, but it wasn't labelled. You had to go to each individual prefecture to find the one you wanted. So I took the existing map and labelled it. And thus it began...
I started making maps. I was inspired by Morwen's work, who had made awesome maps of the many divisions of the British Isles. I adopted her color scheme, and got tips from her, and went to work.
I've made maps for many countries now, just the top-level divisions for now. Now that most countries are mapped, I thought about what else needed to be done. I started making named maps, for people who want to print out a map. And I started putting up my blank maps (currently in PNG; someday I may start using a vector format like SVG).
Note: Even though my blank maps are high resolution, this does not mean that every squiggle and line is authoritative. These are traces of other maps, usually public domain CIA or UN maps, but the fact remains that little squiggles are probably caused by my mouse slipping or my hand twitching. I don't know, I'm paranoid someone will think that my lines are authoritative.
I'm now starting to even do maps that Morwen and others have already done, because 1) I want to have a whole Golbez Suite of maps for people to use, and 2) These don't usually have named/blank versions available. This is NOT to denigrate the work of Morwen and others at all, far from it - but I just wanted to have blank maps available for myself in case they are needed, or if the regions change, etc. And there's nothing wrong with a tad redundancy, right? :)
I am making named maps using the native names, the English names, and where possible, the ISO standard names. Usually, the English and ISO maps will be identical, as the ISO is the "standard" naming. Sometimes, the native and English names are identical as well, with languages that use Latin scripts and such. English names are usually taken from the English Wikipedia.

Skipped - the existing maps are so good, and due to a lack of maps, this will have to wait until I finish the rest.
Wow, there is no reason whatsoever to duplicate this awesome work.
