ABOUT DR. OM PARKASH EYE INSTITUTE Dr. Om Parkash Institute of Medical Sciences and research founded by, Dr. Om Parkash ji in 1968, Dr. Om Parkash Eye Institute is one of the most prominent eye care hospital which believes serving humanity with truth, trust & transparency. Dr. Om Parkash Eye institute is a chain of eye hospital in Punjab Headquarter at The Mall, Amritsar has continued to expand its portfolio of satellite services within its periphery & neighbouring towns at Pathankot, Batala, Gurdaspur through the network of eye hospitals & clinics. ABOUT THE FOUNDER Dr. Om Parkash was born on the 22nd of July 1928 at Dulmial in Jhelum District now in Pakistan. The idea of becoming an eye surgeon was conceived by inspiration from Dr. Tulsi Dass ji, his maternal uncle.
Dr Tulsi Dass ji was the leading Ophthalmologist in free India. He was conferred upon with prestigious national honour by President of India with Padam Bhushan. He was also the Director Founder of world fame Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. As a second generation Ophthalmologist, Dr. Om Parkash ji did his graduation and post graduation from Glancy Medical College, Amritsar in year 1950 and 1957 respectively.
He joined the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical College Amritsar and worked in various capacities till he was shifted to Medical College Rohtak, where he was head of the department of ophthalmology. In those days of 1968 when the Govt. job was considered a highly coveted and securing job, he resigned against all oppositions from all quarters and set up his private practice in Amritsar. He was also instrumental in starting Rajan Memorial Eye Institute, Jalandhar which conducted more than 300 Free Eye Camps in Punjab, Haryana, and J&K States.
Under his patronage Rajan Memorial Eye Institute got The Medical Council of India’s recognition for 4-housemanship in a year also it was the sole eye institute in state of Punjab, which was given recognition by the National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for Post-Graduate Degree in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Om Parkash ji was a teacher to core of his heart & the inclination to teaching was further catered to by his joining as Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at prestigious Christian Medical College Ludhiana for one day in a week.
In 1982, he set up Dr. Om Parkash Satyam Netralaya on Mall Road, Amritsar to carry forward his medical excellence.
He was true visionary as there were lots of first to his credit. At present scenario when we have specialists in Ophthalmology i.e. Cataract, Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, Occuloplasty, our founder Dr. Om Parkash ji was all rounder in all ophthalmological branches through hands on experience & competency.
He was pioneer in Posterior Chamber Intra Ocular Lens Implantation in India. Also Dr. Om Parkash ji changed with time and started using Operating Microscope leaving traditional method of using loop.
He was one among few of his time of Ophthalmologist to be fully adept in Vitreo Retina Surgeries & have performed more than 1000 Retinal surgeries during his time. Our legendary founder had to his credit more than 1, 90,000 eye surgeries.
Though he was snatched away, when the best was yet to be at the age of 57 yrs on Dec 21st, 1985 but only to leave memories & inspiration from his professional ethics, discipline, commitment & clinical excellence and of course Dr. Om Parkash Satyam Netralaya which is proudly standing taller & growing in its present avatar as Dr. Om Parkash Eye Institute (P) Ltd & serving the mankind of his teachings & core human values under the kind leadership of his son Dr. Rohit Om Parkash.
