New essay on evidence-based mapping

Hi everyone,
A recent deletion discussion on English Wikipedia has set an important precedent about the criteria that maps need to comply to in order to be used on English Wikipedia, and in which cases they may be removed from English Wikipedia per WP:OR, WP:UNSOURCED or WP:SYNTH. I've written a new essay, Commons:Evidence-based mapping, to help users to make accurate maps on Commons that will be acceptable for usage on (English) Wikipedia, to deal with existing inaccurate and unsourced maps on Commons, and to improve cooperation between users. I think some of you may be interested in reading this, because we don't want users to waste their time on creating bad maps that cannot be deleted on Commons, but cannot be used on (English) Wikipedia either (or risk being removed). If any of you think the essay can be improved further, feel free to make suggestions or corrections on the text here or its talk page. I hope this essay can be really helpful, and if many people agree, perhaps it can eventually be elevated to a guideline. Happy to receive your feedback! Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:01, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

I have a request to upload SVG.

I'm sorry, but please.

To revive the symbol of Japan, Kamon,

I don't do volunteer work, but at least it's common.

In order not to forget the existence of Kamon in Wiki,

I'm asking you to upload it.

I beg you.

part of SVG logo becomes invisible when I try to resize it

I'm trying to use Vector Paint to crop File:Pure-storage-vector-logo.svg to remove as much white space as possible. However, the orange element becomes invisible when I use the "Fit to Content" option. This does not occur if I manually resize the image. I also have not seen this issue for other files. Is this issue with the file or the web application? Ixfd64 (talk) 19:15, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

@Ixfd64: Can you now try it with the current file?  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 16:28, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
The current version looks good. Thanks! Ixfd64 (talk) 16:47, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

WTF is wrong with File:Selenium logo.svg

Hi. I uploaded File:Selenium logo.svg and am mystified. The SVG is very very plain yet it renders totally wrong. How can I fix this ?? Thanks DemonDays64 (talk) 00:50, 27 September 2021 (UTC) (please ping on reply)

@DemonDays64: Wikimedia's SVG renderer can be quirky. You can use the Commons SVG Checker to see what might be affecting the file's appearance. clpo13(talk) 04:02, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
This is w:en:Wikipedia:SVG help#arc flags. More specifically, in the d= attribute of the ‎<path /> elements, there are a number of constructs like a18.85 18.85.0 01-2.57-.2 25 25 0 01-2.74-.53 where data has been run together. To fix this, make sure that there is at least one space before every value; make sure that non-integer values that are less than 1 have a leading zero; use commas instead of spaces where coordinate pairs are used. So this particular one (which is an arcto and so accepts seven values: rx ry x-axis-rotation large-arc-flag sweep-flag x y) would become a 18.85 18.85 0.0 0 1 -2.57,-0.2 25 25 0 0 1 -2.74,-0.53 --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 07:51, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
@DemonDays64 and Clpo13: The issue is reported at phab:T217990. The problem is that Wikimedia uses c-librsvg, which is unmaintained and deprecated by the developer since end of 2017[1][2][3]. The issue could be solved by changing the renderer, see phab:T40010. I made some SVG-Benchmarks and resvg won in all categories, however WMF-developers are too busy to change the renderer. resvg is available as a fully portable image, so no installation/dependencies would be needed.
PS. I fixed the image using User:SVGWorkaroundBot.  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 16:15, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

Helping a user to draw SVG

User:Gameposo created hundreds of FAKE SVG (see Fake SVGs by Gameposo). Please, can somebody tell him how to draw SVG by using the tools? I cannot do myself, I am not knowing about SVG tools. -- sarang사랑 12:58, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

I can recommend youtube, it's imho much better than anyone explaining via text or zoom.
@Sarang: You don't have any Inkscape-knowledge, so you would be perfect to decide which videos fit best for Inkscape-newbies.
Imho it is more likely to recommend to upload the original PNGs, instead creating the images in a vector-software, that's imho the first step. Getting to use vector-software is imho the second step.
I assume the Fake-SVGs are converted from PNG to SVGs because some might say SVGs would superior, which is absolutely wrong! (If you find this statement anywhere please let me know, I'll fix that.)
@Gameposo: PNGs are undoubted preferred compared to SVGs, could you please upload your images as PNG?
However overruling the file-format is that vector-data are superior than raster-data, this statement sometimes mixed up with the file-format-preference.

I am fearing that I discouraged him, he uploads now mainly PNG; but sometimes also fakes -- sarang사랑 17:13, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
@JoKalliauer: I just see that he had asked #I have a request to upload SVG. for help, in vain. About Youtube, I cannot access it anymore, since it requires a registration but I am not willing to give all the necessary personal data. It is the same as with google, microsoft and all the other services like facebook. So Youtube is not an option for me -- sarang사랑 08:10, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
