What is Wiki Loves Folklore 2023?[edit]
Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 is an international photo contest which aims at documenting tangible and intangible culture and heritage of different parts of the world. Wiki Loves Folklore is a continuation of Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2022 project with the theme of folk culture. The contest will run from 1 February until March 31 2023.
The basic aim of the competition is to collect photos of cultural heritage to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. The photos provided must match the theme, although the contest is not limited to any official list of protected areas, which means that most users will be able to find several pertaining subjects close to the theme emphasizing on folk culture of that area. Last year our theme was festivals, rituals, and ceremonies to document the cultural heritage. This year we are back with folklore heritage. There have been contests organized in different regions locally on the national levels, such as Wiki Loves Culture, Wiki Loves Festivals, Wiki Loves Folk, Wiki Loves Heritage for documenting culture.
Our cultural photo contest brings opportunities to photographers around the globe to document culture around different parts of the world.
What is Intangible Heritage?[edit]

- (a) oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage;
- (b) performing arts;
- (c) social practices, rituals and festive events;
- (d) knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;
- (e) traditional craftsmanship.
Why Wiki Loves Folklore?[edit]
Since 2019, 158+ countries have participated and we hope that this year we can bring together cultural heritage from different parts of the world, including, underrepresented regions without organized affiliates.
The project will be run on an international level. However, some specific actions (promotional events, communication, etc.) will be held in some countries with participating affiliates in their regions.

What happens to the photos or media after they are uploaded?[edit]
All images or media that are used on Wikipedia are uploaded to a website called Wikimedia Commons. This is a large and wonderful database of images, audio, and video files. All those media files are published under free licenses – this means that they are free to be re-used by anyone as long as they say who authored the photograph or media and keep them free (under the same license). What was Wiki Loves Folk?[edit]
Wiki Loves Folk was a photography contest focused on festivals of tourist interest. It was organised by Wikimedia Spain between 2016 and 2020 and in the different editions 228 people participated and 6039 photographs were taken. The aim of the contest was to obtain a global and unique vision of the folklore of Spain through those festivals or celebrations declared of international, national, regional, provincial and local tourist interest (religious celebrations, carnivals, popular festivals, historical recreations, gastronomic festivals...). Wiki Loves Folk is now a part of Wiki Loves Folklore since 2023.
What is Wiki Loves Falles?[edit]
Wiki Loves Falles 2023 is a photography contest focused on the Falles, the most known festival of tourist interest in Valencia and its Hinterland. It has been organized by L’Etno, as part of its GLAM-Wiki project, since 2017, in partnership with Wiki Loves Folk campaign. The aim of the contest was to get pictures and write articles about the Falles, a festival whose characteristics make very appealing to record. Wiki Loves Falles is now a part of Wiki Loves Folklore since 2022.
How do I get involved?[edit]
It's really simple and easy, and fun! You may participate in two main ways:
- You can participate in the contest itself! Grab your camera (or any relevant device) and shoot pictures or a video clip or a sound file. Upload!

What are the technical requirements for the pictures?[edit]
There aren't any general technical requirements for the pictures. All self-taken photos that fulfilled the other basic rules and fit within the Wikimedia Commons scope will be accepted into the contest. The main goal of Wiki Loves Folklore is to collect as many pictures that can be used on Wikipedia as possible. Quality pictures are essential to the success of your entry and the competition. What software will be used to upload pictures?[edit]
We will be using the UploadWizard simplified by a special Wiki Loves Folklore overlay.
Pictures can be uploaded using other tools (e.g. Commonist, but this requires further knowledge of wiki markup and Wikimedia Commons itself).

How should I tag the images?[edit]
All images uploaded via the special upload wizard will be put in the Category:Images from Wiki Loves Folklore 2023. If you do not use the specialized upload wizard, please add the template {{Wiki Loves Folklore 2023}} to the tags so that we can identify the image as part of the contest.
Where will special activities take place?[edit]
Affiliates that would like to host events to present Wikimedia Commons, and organize photo hunt parties or mass-upload sessions events can list themselves here.

The organizers of the Wiki Loves Folklore competition reserve the right to modify these rules or to cancel the contest at their sole discretion, even after it has started. The organizers accept no responsibility for the provision by the sponsors of any prizes, nor of any liability whatsoever in respect of this contest. Neither the rules nor anything on these pages amounts to an offer to create legally binding relations with any of the organizers. Members of the jury and continental organizers are not eligible to receive any award (although they are otherwise welcome to contribute images).
