Add new question![edit]

Add a new question in your language. how to remove the uploaded picture ????????????

Other languages? Help for individual countries?[edit]

In the Netherlands we've a local help desk like this. I don't know about other languages. I think it would be a good idea to make this page more accessible to people who aren't able to communicate in English. I don't know how we could do that in a good way. Mvg, Basvb (talk) 16:06, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can now ask questions for the United States WLM contest at Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_in_the_United_States/Get_Started.
Smallbones (talk) 16:13, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't one place for all kinds of questions going to give us quicker answers? My estimate is 50-250 questions in total in september, doesn't seem to much for one page. Greets, Basvb (talk) 16:27, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think having the main message translated into the principal languages would be sufficient.--Ymblanter (talk) 01:08, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please, translate it at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Help desk/header. --V.Riullop (talk) 09:44, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see that now there are four languages available for the translated header but I only see the English version on this page. Can it be fixed, or is this smth with my preferences?--Ymblanter (talk) 14:40, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The message is now in your preferences' language or English by default. You can try it with uselang parameter, for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Help_desk?uselang=ru --V.Riullop (talk) 14:51, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thanks. My default language is indeed English.--Ymblanter (talk) 01:19, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Photo Editing[edit]

Is Photo Editing allowed in this contest or only original is allowed?

Photo editing is allowed. Since the edited photos sometimes do not show EXIF data, it might be a good idea to indicate explicitly in the description that the file was edited by you.--Ymblanter (talk) 21:15, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is allowed to edit. But up to the jury how much they apriciate it. Please keep in mind that the photo's should be usable in an encyclopedia. Maybe also upload the original when you make huge edits. Greetz, Basvb (talk) 21:17, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Photo editing is allowed, but should be restricted to the minimum. Acceptable are color, rotation and perspective corrections. Do not add a watermark or a frame. Yann (talk) 09:42, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deadline[edit]

What is the last date of Photos submission?

When do we find out who wins?

Can my photo be of a monument from a different country?[edit]

If I have visited another country and wish to upload a picture of one of their monuments, can I do that? Or is it necessarily pictures only of monuments of my own country?

Where is the definition of "monument"?[edit]

The word "monument" means different things to different people in different places. How does one determine whether a photograph is of a monument? Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:54, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • The monuments eligible for the contest have been declared as such by national and local authorities and have a valid ID. For instance, for the US this year it is the National Register of Historic Places.--Ymblanter (talk) 15:24, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File size and resolution of the photographs to be uploaded.[edit]

I didn't find the file size and the resolution of the photographs to be uploaded, Please let the participants know the same. Thanks.

Can be any size and any resolution. Low sizes (say below 1200x800px) are unlikely to get attention from the jury, high sizes (over 12.5M) do not reproduce thumbnails correctly.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:07, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with thumbnails only exists for PNG files. For JPEG images, thumbnails can be made from images of any size.
I would add, please do not upload small size (below 640x480), they are not much useful for Wikipedia. Yann (talk) 09:36, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of monuments[edit]

Is there a list of monuments recognized my Wikimedia India, only from which the photographs can be taken? Also, should the photos uploaded should mention the ASI id no. ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stausifr (talk • contribs)

Yes, please refer to the English Wikipedia for a list of cultural heritage monuments in India. The lists contains the ASI ID numbers, and we ask you to provide this while uploading your photos for the competition. Thanks in advance! odder (talk) 09:46, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help with categorization[edit]

I'd like to ask help of people familiar with related places to categorize uploads of next users:

Thank you.

EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:45, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Note that all these users haven't added the WLM template (not used the WLM upload which does that automatic) and therefor these images don't participate in WLM on the moment. Basvb (talk) 09:47, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's reasonable to categorize big batches of architecture related photos regardless it uploaded because of campaign or not. Anyway selection of images will be wider for other projects and they will be easier to find. Isn't this is goal of Wiki Loves Monuments? :-) --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:33, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Offcourse it is, and that was not what I was trying to say with my note. My main worry is that these users wanted to participate in WLM but did not find the right way how to do so, and therefor should be informed. Greets, Basvb (talk) 09:47, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

panorama[edit]

Is panoramic photography accepted?

It is accepted, and indeed very warmly welcomed! odder (talk) 20:30, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

uploaded a photo, how to add ASI number[edit]

I have already uploaded a few photos. how to add ASI number fot the monument? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sudipta 1784 (talk • contribs)

First a comment for next time: Please use this uploadcampaign. That will ask you for the number and will be much easier.
For the 3 pictures you've uploaded you can add the number by adding the text: {{ASI Monument|NUMBER HERE}} to the pictures. The "NUMBER HERE" has to be replaced by the ASI-numbers on the monuments lists. Greets, Basvb (talk) 09:45, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

App Android without Google Play[edit]

Hello, is possible download app android without using Google Play service?

change the ASI number[edit]

how can I change the ASI number of a file that I have already uploaded?

i want to know about copy right rules[edit]

I want that my pic are shared with my friends only. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anubrat (talk • contribs)

Sorry, but that's not possible here. By publishing your pictures here, you allow the whole world to use them for any purpose, including commercial use. Regards, Yann (talk) 11:48, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

results[edit]

When will the results be declared

Probably in November, but everything from October to December is possible. Greets, Basvb (talk) 15:25, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How will pictures get embedded[edit]

Hi! I uploaded serveral pictures with the android app. I am wondering what will be the next step, will the pictures be linked to the wikipedia articles automatically, do I have to do this, or will other users connect the pictures in wikipedia?

upload without wizard[edit]

The wizard doesn't work. How can it be managed without it? The FAQ doesn't say anything about it or at least i can't find it anywhere. --Haselburg-müller (talk) 20:34, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can always upload with the old way: Special:Upload. Yann (talk) 04:42, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
ok, thank you, but i'm still not sure how to categorize it correctly (example). --Haselburg-müller (talk) 19:52, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your categorisation in the example looks good. Make sure "{{Wiki Loves Monuments|de}}" is on all of the pictures which you want to take part. Basvb (talk) 21:01, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What parts of a monument are acceptable?[edit]

I will be taking some photos of Hearst Castle. Is only the outer facade accepted for this contest, or are interior elements also OK? -- King of 06:35, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My Photo[edit]

Hi I am Dharti. i Participating in this Competition . but i have no idea how to see uploaded photo. and Result .

In your own contributions here you can see what you have uploaded. There are processes to get at least the pictures used in the lists, but that is all done by volunteers and might take a while. Because the ASI id is specified, if people search for pictures of the specific monument, they can find it as well and use it. Akoopal (talk) 16:07, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to and where to upload the photos ??[edit]

Hello,

I was unable to upload the photos. Please tell me how to and where to upload them.. ??

Thank you,

I can't exactly figure out what the problem is that you are having with uploading. Please try to click at one of the countries here and see if that works. If it doesn't please be more specific on why you are unable to upload the photos. Greets, Basvb (talk) 09:30, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About Results :O[edit]

When will the results be declared ? :O :D -.-

progress of my uploaded photo[edit]

How can i know about the progress of my uploaded photo? How can i know which photos are selected?

here you can see a list of edits you've done. When you go to the page of the picture you can see where this picture is used on Wikipedia. After September the jury from your country will watch the pictures and select the winners. After that they will contact the winners. Greetz, Basvb (talk) 20:33, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to delete a photo that was uploaded accidentally ?[edit]

'Please suggest the way by which I could delete some photos that were not supposed to be uploaded because they have my family in the foreground !!!'

Please paste links to the files you want to have deleted below, and I will delete them; you can create a link to a file using the following code: [[:File:Example.jpg]]. odder (talk) 07:46, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ASI no[edit]

What is an ASI no.? I just uploaded 3 pics of University of Pune

what is an ASI no. for this?

ASI number is the monument identifier from the Archeological Survey of India. You can browse through the lists of monuments in India at en:Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Wiki Loves Monuments to find out the identifier. --V.Riullop (talk) 19:09, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

why can't I upload a picture of armenia?[edit]

why can't I upload a picture of armenia?

I misplaced the titles of two of my uploaded works. I just need to switch the titles. How do I edit them?[edit]

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/VibhaRao

I have switched their names. Next time you can put {{rename|NEW NAME}} on them and somebody will rename them. Basvb (talk) 09:07, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HOW TO ENTER THE ASI NUMBER OF EACH MONUMENTS ?[edit]

I have entered the ASI numbers of the monuments wrongly .How to rewrite it ?

question about the location.[edit]

can anyone participate from cities other than Mumbai?

  • If you ask whether one can upload photographs from the cultural heritage monuments in India other than Mumbai, the answer is yes. If you ask whether the uploader has to be in Mumbai, the answer is that the uploader can be anywhere in the world, it does not matter.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:16, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Other Photographs[edit]

Hiii,

I want to ask, Is this competition for photographs of monuments only? can I upload photos of natural scenes also for your consideration?

When do we find out who wins the phototgraphy contest?

It was only for the many thousands of of objects in certain national Category:heritage registers. You may also be interested in Commons:Quality images. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:45, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HOW TO CHECK THE STATUS ?[edit]

HOW CAN ONE CHECK THE STATUS OF ONE'S CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS ??? THAT THEY HAVE BEEN SELECTED, DISCARDED OR NOT EVEN CONSIDERED ???

It will take some time to work through all the photos and properly judge them. Different countries will have different schedules, but the final 10 best photos from each country have to be submitted to the international contest by October 30. In the US, 500 screened photos (from over 22,000) will be submitted to the official jury by October 10 and a link will be posted here to take you to a list of those photos. The jury will select the top 10 by October 28 (link will be here). To check your own individual photos now, click "My uploads" in the upper right hand corner for a list of your recent uploads. Click the picture to go to the complete file. Look near the bottom of the file to see if the photo has been included in any articles or any lists. There may (or may not) also be some hint of the working status of the file, e.g. "nominated" under categories. Please do not change these categories, it will only interfere with the jury processing, and copies of the lists are maintained off wiki for safety. Smallbones (talk) 03:54, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deadline[edit]

I managed to upload some photos (due to absolute lack of experience with wiki editing) around 22:30 (probably GMT) wiki-time (on Sept. 30) , but returned to trying to add proper contest category only about 2 hours later. Photo-files per se (or at least first version of it) are dated as of Sept. 30, but wiki bot deletes respective "Wiki Loves Monuments 2012..." category as file (maybe meaning wiki-file in its entirety this time?) added too late. Are files uploaded in (GMT) time eligible for contest, if JPGs really uploaded half and hour late local time (which was GMT+2) and added to category some (2-3) hours later? Not crucial but might be practical to know exactly next (2013) year. from anon 78.99.217.255

The contest is run by the national WLM groups, with pretty good coordination from the overall group. It's best to contact the national group. Cutoff times, for example, are decided by the national groups, according to local geography. For this year, I'm guessing it's too late.
Thanks for concentrating on next year. This problem has been discussed at several levels by the organizers. IMHO the problem comes from 2 groups a) folks who upload a couple of pix near the end, and the upload ends up a couple of minutes after the deadline, and b) folks who for some reason decide to upload 100s of photos in the last 30 minutes - slowing things down for everybody. My personal opinion is to be as nice as possible to group a) and as strict as possible with group b). Among other organizers, 2 sides of the discussion are are 1) let a bot decide, this is a purely objective method, but pretty strict, and 2) let people decide, according to the facts of the case - pretty messy though.
In any case, for next year, I'll suggest doing everything possible to upload before the last 30 minutes. And we'll try to take steps to minimize the problem.

Is there any memento for those could not win a prize ...[edit]

Firstly I would congratulate the organisers on being recognised by guineas book of world records. Speaking of someone like me who participated but could not win a prize, are there any mementos that would be awarded ? The hopes of which is imparted by the (http://www.wikilovesmonuments.in/awards/) page that remarks 15000 trophies!! If so please let us know when can we expect that??

  • I believe everybody (at least every registered user) who participated got a welcome message, and this is the only thing which was planned to be done. If you want to award smth else you are obviously free to do it.--Ymblanter (talk) 08:42, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • you quit did not get me I think. I meant the trophies mentioned as the prizes are for whom ?
