English: A watch tower stands overlooking Bamyan province, Afghanistan, on top of a fortified urban site dating back to the time of Genghis Khan. The tower pictured here was considered to be the heart of the city of Bamyan before it was burned to the ground and its inhabitants massacred by the Mongol hoards in 1221. The site as a whole is called Shahr-e-Gholghola which is roughly translated into city of screams.
