English: U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Luke Thompson, a pilot with the 302nd Airlift Wing, U.S. Air Force Reserve Command, talks to reporters about the National Interagency Fire Center-directed movement of four military C-130s equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System from Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport here July 3, 2013. The discussion came after he and fellow MAFFS crew members arrived. A self-contained aerial fire fighting system owned by the U.S. Forest Service, MAFFS modules are loaded into the cargo bays of C-130 aircraft. Following USFS lead planes, military aircrews can discharge 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant from the MAFFS modules along the leading edge of a forest fire in less than five seconds and cover an area a quarter of a mile long by 100-feet wide. Until July 3, four MAFFS-equipped planes from Thompson's unit and the 146th Airlift Wing of the California Air National Guard had been fighting fires from Peterson.
