Description
English: Petty Officer 3rd Class Cameron Simpson, a boatswain's mate, plots the position of the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star while acting as quartermaster of the watch while underway near Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze 2015, Jan. 7, 2015. QMOWs ensure the cutter is following approved tracklines and make course and speed recommendations to conning officers. Polar Star is supporting the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is managed by the National Science Foundation. Military support to the USAP, dubbed Operation Deep Freeze 2015, is a joint-service mission to support civilian scientific research in Antarctica.
