Description |
Bowl, Kangxi 1690´s with scenes and inscriptions from the drama ”The West Chamber”This fine bowl has a Dutch shape called “klapmuts” by collectors, because it resembles an upside-down hat worn by poor people in 17th century Netherlands. In spite of the fact that it was made for Europe it bears an entirely Chinese design, having pictures and inscriptions copied from a woodblock-printed book of the love story Xi Xiang ji (Romance of the Western Chamber). Here, young hero Scholar Zhang (bearing a wrapped gift) has contacted his childhood friend General Du to subdue bandits besieging Pujiu Temple where the hero and his beloved are staying, and bandit chieftain Tiger Sun begs for mercy before General Du. The two inscriptions on the bowl are not direct quotations, but mention beleagured Pujiu Temple, heroine Yingying, and Scholar Zhang. There is an apocryphal six-character Chenghua reign mark (1465-87) on the base. |
