English: U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Patrick Rogers of Galveston, Texas, helps secure U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Stumpff of Fort Bragg, N.C., to extraction equipment suspended 85 feet below a U.S. Army medevac helicopter July 4. Stumpff and Pfc. Michael Halberg of Battle Ground, Wash., were attacked by insurgents while on patrol. Stumpff was shot in the head, but the bullet passed through his helmet, leaving a small furrow in the top of his head. While seeking cover from enemy fire, the pair of 4th BCT, 25th Infantry Division soldiers became trapped on a small ledge in the mountainous terrain, requiring medevac extraction. Valkyrie medevac, a dual-state U.S. Army National Guard unit serving with Task Force Wolfpack, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade on Forward Operating Base Salerno, responded to the call, facing ongoing enemy fire, high winds, close proximity to trees and rocks, and steep cliffs to recover the two soldiers. |
