Summary[edit]

Description

This church was built on the site of a nunnery founded by St Cuthburga who started building here in c.705. 

The oldest parts of the current church date from 1120 and it was completed about  1460.

It is one of three churches in the UK answerable directly to the monarch. The other two being Westminster Abbey and St George's Chapel.

Ethelred - the brother of Alfred the great was buried here after he died fighting the Danes at Martin, near Wimborne in 871.

Most of the stained glass is mid 19th c as the original glass had been neglected and was falling apart. A major restoration of the church took place in the 1850's.

It is still a busy and well used church today - although I have never paid it much attention before!

Well it was more interesting than going Christmas shopping!
