[edit] Thecup.jpg
Can you please tell me how I can ensure that an image I upload is not deleted in the wikimedia commons?
Specifically the cover image of the the book "The Cup" I tried my best to replicate the permissions of similar images, but obviously it was deleted speedily.
I was asked by the author of the book to upload it. He gave me the permissions to do so. What do I need to do to get the image back online?
Thanks.

[edit] Copyright johndwyer.jpg
Hi Abigor:
Thanks for taking time to check the copyright of images in Wikipedia. I realise this must be a time-consuming task.
I am Professor John Dwyer and I own the copyright of my picture at my university profile www.roehampton.ac.uk/staff/johndwyer. This copyright is explicitly stated there.
If the wording is incorrect, viz. "Permission is given by the author to use this photo for any purpose provided that legal requirements are met", please advise me on the correct wording to use at john.dwyer@roehampton.ac.uk.
Thank you.
John.
Wiki Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dwyer_(professor)
- Hello John,
- You are right that the checking of the copyright on files takes a lot of time, I think the most of the administrators spend a lot of time on this and it isn't a real job that people like.
- I noticed that there was a note on the page that says Permission is given by the author to use this photo for any purpose provided that legal requirements are met but there is no note about what kind of legal requirements there are and later on the page I find the note that says © Copyright 2009 Roehampton University. All rights reserved. and that makes it kind of confusing.
- Probably the best way to continue is that you send a email to to permissions-en[at]wikimedia[dot]org where you state what kind of requirments must be met, that way we have the requirements archived in our system and it can easily be checked by us.
- I know that this sounds like a difficult way but we at Wikimedia are very serious about copyrights and we don't want to see that somebody gets in trouble because he used the picture that was visible on Commons.
- After the Wikimedia team has received the email, they will undelete the file and email you back. If you have any questions or need help just ask and I will do my best to help you.
- Huib talk 17:51, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
OK will do, John.
- Okay thanks for your understanding :) Huib talk 17:59, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Abigor:
I emailed the photo JohnDwyer.jpg with "permission to use for any purpose" as you suggested but I am not sure how to restore it.
Can you help?

- Hi,

[edit] deleted pic
Hello, Abigor.
I'm sorry you are experiencing health issues, but also I am glad to notice they did not prevent you from working for the benefit of Wikicommmons.
As you deleted the picture of Getúlio Vergas and Gen. Edgar Facó, the only one I had posted here, up to now, I would love to hear your reasons... You might, at least, have left me a note telling me about it. Do I sound as if I were whining? Well... I'm not.
Imagine instead a cheerful and puzzled tone.
That copy of the picture is dated from 1940; date written on it's back by the general's daughter Elda. Is that the problem? Of course, it just "might" be from 1939... when it would be free to be posted anywhere by anyone. Should I wait 2 months and repost it? Or should I choose another one, a year older? Pity, the dictator Vargas won't be in any other. I don't believe anyone knows who took the picture. As far as I know, the owners of the picture are the members of the Facó family.
Or was it some other problem?
thank you 4 your attention!
--Betty VH (talk) 19:22, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Betty,
- I have deleted the file because it didn't have a license, and its very important on Commons that files have a license because the license shows how the file can be used, what kind of attribution is needed and that kind of things.
- The file has been tagged with {{nld}} on 10 - 11 - 2009 and from that moment you had 7 days to fix the problem, and those days ended to day, so I deleted it.
- Feel free to reupload the file if you attached a good license to it. I would advice you to read on COM:L to know what kind of licensing is accepted and what license is the best for your file.
- When needed I can email you the file if you don't have it anymore but therefor please send me a email so I have your email adress, my mail can be found on my userpage.
- Best regards,
- Huib talk 19:37, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Renaming certain categories
I've started linking from image pages and am enjoying that work very much. While I am at it, I have realized that I would love to get a number of categories renamed so that they are more consistent in name format with others in the same subject groups. This desire of mine pertains especially to several of the subcategories listed under those of the kings and queens and princes and princesses of Sweden where the inconsistencies are confusing and disturbing. Is this a hard thing to do? Can I send you a proposed list by email of how this would look if we can do it? Can you help me with it? I know nothing about bots - might such a thing help? SergeWoodzing (talk) 22:52, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Serge,
- Sorry that you needed to wait almost 3 days for a answer, but I wasn't feeling that good and wasn't really active here on Commons.
- My main work on Commons is patrolling the recent uploads and deleting stuff, I do not know much about categories, but I think you can find all the information you need here.
- The move self is bot work, its not needed to recat all the files by hand, we have some very usefull bots for that :)
- Best regards,
- Huib talk 10:57, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you! I will post my question at Commons:Categories for discussion and see what happens. SergeWoodzing (talk) 22:03, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] File:Portal-puzzle.svg
Hello, you commented out a {{no license}} template that I had moved from File:Portal-puzzle.svg to File talk:Portal-puzzle.svg, but now Davidgothberg (talk · contributions) has reinstated that template in File:Portal-puzzle.svg, saying that my move to the talk page was out of process. I don't know what the process is (I asked Davidgothberg, but he did not reply). Could you please let me know how it works? Obviously I don't think there is a copyright problem here because the idea of a picture puzzle icon cannot be copyrighted, and obviously Davidgothberg disagrees, but what I don't understand is the procedure by which this disagreement gets resolved. Thanks. Eubulides (talk) 21:55, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi,
- I transcluded it because the talkpage will break the program we work with for checking those files, I think the {{nld}} isn't the right way to go with this file, its heavy used and therefor a normal DR could be better so more people can comment on it. Huib talk 11:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- I just noticed that there is a DR, I will respond there later on this week. Huib talk 11:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Flag_of_the_United_States.svg&action=history
Don't see the point in protecting it (again). If anyone really wanted to, they could easily replace every instance of it with something else without having access to the file. ¦ Reisio (talk) 05:03, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Reisio,
- I also think protection isn't really needed but it is kind of protocol because it is used on more than 50.000 articles, maybe even close to 100.000 and it can cause a lot of damage if a vandal clicks the American flag and vandals it here on Commons. And the main problem isn't even the vandalizing but the rendering, it could bring the server down because it have to replace all the uses twice.
- The file is now semi protected and I guess I can keep it that way just to see how it goes.
- Thanks for the fix.
- Huib talk 05:40, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
If you can, please mark these 2 images that I transferred to Commons.

[edit] Creeton Interlace Fragments
Please could you reinstate this file? Isn't it polite to leave a reminder for the uploader if you find a recently uploaded file that's missing essential permissions? Although I believe I did put the full permissions, as I uploaded it at the same time as two other files which have full Public Domain permission and are my own work. I think if you check back you will find that it said:
Source My own digital photograph
Author SiGarb
Permission (Reusing this image) Own work, all rights released. This version of the image is in the Public Domain. If it is used outside Wikipedia, a photographer's credit (Simon Garbutt) would be appreciated!
It can actually take a fair amount of time to prepare such a composite photo and write a comprehensive description for it, and no time at all for someone to overzealously delete it. Thank you so much. SiGarb (talk) 16:44, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hello,
- I have restored the file, but there is still a kind of problem with it, because you say that the file is {{PD-self}} but you would like {{Attribution}} so it isn't clear what kind of license you want, so please add one of the two templates I just give to the file.
- I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get a notice on your talkpage, it was tagged by a bot and normally he always notifies the uploader, I guess something went wrong and its really to bad that you didn't know about the problem.
- Feel free to ask more questions to me when needed,

[edit] World Digital Library undeletion
Hi there. I notice you closed the following undeletion request as "not done": Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive/2009-11#File:World_Digital_Library_-_Launch.png. However, I believe your reason (that the OTRS permission had not arrived) was not correct; I forwarded it on the 8th as I mentioned there, and another OTRS volunteer confirmed that it had arrived underneath your statement. If it's not too much trouble, could you revisit this? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. -kotra (talk) 03:01, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- If I may answer this one: don't worry, not done just means pending until OTRS clears it. But as soon as they check and validate the mail they received, they will undelete the images. It will just take some more time because there's a small backlog, but it will be dealt with eventually. –Tryphon☂ 08:30, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah like Tryphon is saying :)
- I kind of mend it will be handled if OTRS permission arrives on the file, so it will be undeleted or a new request will be made after a OTRS volunteer says its okay :) Huib talk 09:18, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, ok. Thanks, and sorry for the misunderstanding! -kotra (talk) 16:33, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Every Picture deleted from Account:Mashiprecords
This pictures are a work from me. Please bring it back to my side. Every picture I uploaded its a work from me! Greetings from Germany
S.Schmidt
- Hi,
- You're uploads where covers for music files, and its impossible for use to check if you are really the person working for this company or not, so we need OTRS permission to use those files under a free license.
- I kind of understand if you think why? Its simple, if you upload a file here on Commons it means that everybody can use that file either for personal use or commercional use to protect the companies we decided that we need to verify who is uploading that stuff, you dont want people uploading your covers and let other bands use it without your knowledge right?
- So you should send a email to permissions-commons(at)wikimedia.org and that email should look like:
- Hello,
- I give permission to use the files uploaded from our company under a <place license here>, I understand that I give permission to use this file for commercional use, personal use, share-a-like under te conditions as told in the license.
- Best regards,
- <name> <function> <company>
- If you send this email from a mailadres that can be matched with the company name the OTRS volunteers will undelete the files for you.
- If you need any help please feel free to ask.

Hi Abigor, is there a specific reason why you edited my comment? -- User:Docu at 11:03, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Docu,
- I only moved your comment because it was on the wrong place, you opposed under the == neutral == header, I moved it to the right spot so its easier to check the count.
- Best regards,
- Huib talk 11:05, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'd rather have it under the neutral header. I'm really neutral on the whole thing in general. Do you mind if I place it back? BTW the standard layout for these pages is less divisive. Do you think we should change it to that? (Look at some of the other requests) -- User:Docu at 11:14, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- I rollback my changes, but why place a oppose under the neutral header, it isn't like its going to count less because its under a header.
- I noticed also that this is a new style, I kind of like the new page, more easy to check the votes. Huib talk 12:07, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Not sure if it really helps, e.g. not all 'oppose' are necessarily being counted, wherever their placement. -- User:Docu at 12:39, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Category John Quinlan (wrestler)
Just thought I would also post this on your talk page to ensure they are properly deleted. Thank you so much for your input last time. Fewimage files were not deleted last timethat should have been.....
These images should have been deleted already with all the rest but they were titled wrong in the previous deletion request so they are unfortunately still there. These are the correct titles above. They should have been titled correctly in the first place in:
Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Category John Quinlan (wrestler)
The reason for the deletion of these image files is the same as all of the image files in the category above.....uploaded without proper consent of owner.
