English: Artist's conception of the source of "the black layer," an archaeological term for a layer of ash spread between the Pelopion and the Temple of Hera. Ancient sources suggest the layer came from the leveling of an accumulated pile of ash over the altar of Zeus. Unlike the altar of Hera nearby, nothing else remains.
