The Ambika Devi temple is a 7th-century temple in Nirmand, Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the oldest surviving temple in Kullu valley. It has been repeatedly restored. The Ambika temple is notable for its black Durga statue in Himalayan dress that is covered with gold flakes. Local legends say that this statue was brought from Kashi (Varanasi) and the dress was donated by Rajputs of Jaipur.
The temple preserves a notable copper plate grant of Samudra Sena, and it helps date this temple to the 7th-century. The inscription mentions that the king invited Atharvaveda scholars from Subisagrama to settle here, created this Agrahara named Nirmand for Brahmins to further knowledge. The inscription also says that king's mother named Mihiralakshmi built temples for Mihiresvara (Surya) and Kapileshvara (Shiva).
The temple is pentroof-style suited to the rains and snow in higher hills of Himachal Pradesh. The structure has beautiful woodwork. Outside are two lions. The Ambika temple preserves many items of Hindu artwork within its premises, possibly from previous versions of this temple.
