English: Balla (pronounced Bal) is a village in County Mayo, Ireland on the N60 National secondary road, the main road between Castlebar and Claremorris. The economy of the village survives mainly on passing trade, from the busy N60 which carries over 7,000 vehicles through the village everyday. The village is to be bypassed when the new Castlebar-Claremorris road is constructed. Balla has only one street. It is notable for its round tower. It formerly was a significant shop and market centre. In recent decades it fell into decline and lost its railway station, but has enjoyed something of a revival as a residential area for people working in Castlebar.
Gaeilge:Balla (Balla as Béarla) i lár chontae Mhaigh Eo, agus tá timpeall 1000 duine ina pharóiste. Tá fás ar an mbaile le blianta beaga anuas, mar go bhfuil go leor anois ag taisteal chuile lá go Caisleán an Bharraigh, nó fiú go Gaillimh le obair, agus cónaí ortha anseo. Tá daoine áirithe anois ag tabhairt Balla Álainn ar an mbaile, ach tá dabht go bhfuil aon bhunús stairiúil leis an ainm sin, agus mar sin moltar Balla mar ainm i mBéarla agus i nGaeilge. Luann Raifteirí an baile ina amhrán "Cill Aodáin" ("'S i mBalla taobh thíos de thosós me ag ól")
