Images from Robert Evans Snodgrass's book Insects, their ways and means of living, Smithsonian Scientific Series, Vol. V.; Smithsonian Institution Series, Inc., 1930. The book saw many reprints, the earliest in 1934 and 1938.

The 1930 original edition of this book is available on-line in scanned form at archive.org. The 1938 edition is also available online in the University of Wisconsin Digital Collections.

We consider the book and the illustrations as being in the public domain because of:

  1. archive.org claims it's "possibly public domain" as they have not found any copyright renewal record;
  2. User:Lupo didn't find any copyright renewal record for this book in the online catalog of copyright renewals for the years 1957, 1958, and 1959 either (looking for "Snodgrass", "Abbott" (the series editor), and "Smithsonian");
  3. Snodgrass himself writes in the preface (page iv) that "much of the material in several chapters is taken from articles already printed in the Annual Reports of the Smithsonian Institution. The original drawings for most of the color plates and line cuts are the property of the United States Bureau of Entomology, although some of them are here published for the first time." We take that to mean (a) that this was not the original publication of "much of the material", and (b) that the drawings actually are in the public domain as works of a U.S. government employee. Snodgrass (1875 - 1962) was at that time employed by the U.S. Bureau of Entomology, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.[1]
