English: The Lyceum, located at 201 South Washington Street at the corner of Prince Street in Alexandria, Virginia, was founded in 1834 by Benjamin Hallowell. This building, which served both the Lyceum and the Alexandria Library Company (founded in 1795), was built in 1839. The Civil War interrupted the activities of the Lyceum, and the building was used as a hospital from 1861-65. After the war it was dissolved, and the building became a private residence and then office space. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1969, was saved from demolition in 1970 and was restored in 1974. It is currently the location of the Alexandria History Museum.
