Papua Province (since 2003)
English: Papua is a province of Indonesia, in Western New Guinea. During the Dutch colonial era the region was known as part of "Dutch New Guinea" or "Netherlands New Guinea". Since 1969 it became known as "West Irian" or "Irian Barat" until 1973, and thereafter renamed "Irian Jaya". The current official name of "Papua" was adopted in 2002. In 2003 the western part of the province was separated and renamed "West Papua".
