Somnath – also known as Somnath-Patan, Patan-Somnath, Prabhas–Patan, or Somnath-Veraval – is an ancient town repeatedly plundered, ruined and rebuilt along the coastline of Gujarat. It is the location of Triveni sangam, many Hindu temples and monasteries, of which the Shiva's temple as Somanatha mandir – Somnath temple – is one of the most sacred sites for the Hindus. This and other temples, as well as museums and the city has been rebuilt anew from 1951. Excavations have unearthed evidence that Somnath Patan has seen continuous human settlement from about the mid-2nd millennium BCE. Patan is the name derived from the historic trading port on the old city site; that old port has been eclipsed by the modern era Veraval port to its northwest.
