English: Tarot cards are simply packs of cards with an additional suit of numbered cards. With a few exceptions they are divided into:
- Playing cards. Those intended for playing card games. The first tarot cards were made in Italy in the mid-15th century solely for playing games. This was their original use and one that is still widespread in Europe today.
- Divinatory cards. Those intended for divination. This new use of tarot cards arose in late 18th century France based on Italian-suited packs, notably the Tarot de Marseilles. Since then, cards designed for esoteric use have diverged from traditional packs.
